From March 2023 to December 2024 the Einfühlung series of nine images by Piotr Szyhalski was presented in the lightbox at the corner of Bouwmeestersstraat and Klinkkouterstraat, Ghent Belgium.

Piotr Szyhalski is a Polish born, US based artist compelled by the possibility of collective social transformation, an interest in the history of public messaging and signage, and hope. Szyhalski was thinking about the “capacity of art to be an empathetic space,” and sketched the ideas that led to this series and posted them online in early 2022. The recently completed Einfühlung series, presented in a lightbox in Ghent follows the artist's collections of short idiomatic phrases, like “seeing eye to eye,” each a metaphor for interpersonal relation and interaction.

Einfühlung is a word that translates as “in-feeling” or “feeling-into”, which originated with German philosopher Robert Vischer in the late 19th century. This concept eventually became what we now think of as empathy.

Each phrase selected by Szyhalski is like a micro-poem, where repetition suggests another person, a second body. The verbs have been withheld, but the phrases still resonate—the action always implied. Animating these phrases, Szyhalski has drawn ethereal characters, that both float in the abyss, and are anchored to one another. This elegantly contoured series is suggestive of the invisible lines between the internal world of the individual and the external dynamics of the social body. With and without a caption, the drawings point to metaphors with social resonance, as we seek new forms of togetherness.
